completed projects

Library of Parliament, Ottawa, Ontario | Restoration of one of the oldest and certainly the most beautiful buildings in Canada, behind the Centre Block on Parlaiment Hill. We are subcontracted to Colonial Building Restoration in Toronto, with whom we have worked on the Centre Block project and the Supreme Court building in Hamilton, among others. An exciting project, full of surprises and challenges!

Brooklyn, New York | Placement of two massive statues in front of the Brooklyn Museum of Fine Art in New York.

Queens Park restoration, Toronto, Ontario | 1992-1996

Center Block South facade, Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario | Nearly every form of heritage conservation technique was used on the project, including Jahn repairs, indents, blind exfoliation repairs, grammetric recording, templating, stitching, stonecutting and setting, reconstruction, epoxy repairs and in-situ dressing back of displaced or badly erroded stones, both ashlar and carved. Thousands of stones were dismantled and rebuilt or replaced on the chimneys and turrets, and extensive earthquake reinforcement was installed. The project continued with the dismantling, restoration and rebuilding of the groin vaulted Senate entrance. The intricate cut and carved replacement stones were processed on site in our specially-built banker shop. While onsite, the company also replaced the steps and sidewalks leading up to the Peace Tower. On top of that, Watt delivered a twice-weekly night course on masonry techniques to the forty-odd restoration crew members who were re-pointing the whole facade for the prime masonry subcontractor!

La Fortaleza, Guanica Lighthouse, Capitol building and Church of San José, San Juan, Puerto Rico | The conservation consultant assigned to the Center Block by the Canadian Government was so impressed by the standard of the workmanship carried out by RJW Stonemasons personnel, that they contracted the firm to perform the heritage masonry work at a number of historic sites on the island of Puerto Rico. These included La Fortaleza, (the Governor’s mansion in San Juan), Guanica Lighthouse, the Capitol building and the 16th century church of San José.

Jacob Wray Mould fountain, Manhattan, New York | At the end of September 1999, RJW Stonemasons completed the reinstallation of the 1871 Jacob Wray Mould Fountain in front of the City Hall in Manhattan. The project involved picking up the forty-foot-square granite fountain from Bronx, New York and transporting it back to the company stone shop near Ottawa, Ontario. There, it was cleaned and restored to it’s former glory and a new central column was carved out of Québec granite to replace the one destroyed over the years. The whole lot was then shipped back to New York on nine tractor trailers and rebuilt on the site of its original home.

The building was completed, against all odds, in the Spring of 2002. In 2000, our new stonecutting shop was opened in Ottawa’s west end and was the center of operations for processing the stone required for this project.
